Habitat for Humanity
Staff: Mr. Trice, Habitat Personnel and Americorp Volunteers
DCHS students participated in the construction of a Habitat for Humanity home. Students learned and employed construction skills to provide affordable housing for a Sussex County family.

Jamaica Missions Trip
Staff: Mr. Rusty Dukes, Pastor Tim Dukes and Parent Chaperone
Participants had the exciting and rewarding opportunity to minister to the people of Jamaica through a partnership with Teen Challenge. In addition to helping build dorms at Teen Challenge, teams went out into the community to minister to those in prison, those living on the street, and children in local schools. This was a life changing experience, both for the students and those they touched in Christ’s name.

Culinary Arts
Staff: Mrs. Viramontes
This intense, hands on, interactive course taught students about culinary arts, restaurant management and catering coordination. Students worked closely with Georgia house Restaurant to learn: Portion control, cost analysis, front of the house service, kitchen organization and food prep. Students also learned culinary terms, how to read a recipe, and receive cooking and baking instruction.

The Write Stuff
Staff: Mr. Scott and Miss Daisey
A creative writing workshop designed to immerse students in the thinking/writing process. This course enabled students with writing potential to improve and expand upon their skills. They concentrated on short story, poetry and biographic writing, as they went into the community to interview elderly citizens to produce a literary review on Sussex County memories and musings.

Home Missions
Staff: Sra. Curtis, Mr. Hurst and Pastor Brown
Local Ministry/Service Outreach. Students where challenged through various local service projects to be Christ hands extended. Work with elementary children from North Georgetown Elementary and Howard T. Ennis. Ministry to local nursing homes. Students also cooked for several homeless shelters and our own soup kitchen. Additionally, evangelistic outreach and Sidewalk Sunday School was conducted in the Baltimore area.

Digital Media
Staff: Mr. Sadler and Master Kim
This high-energy course allowed students of any ability to find their niche in the exciting field of contemporary digital design and media. Using the new DCHS Mac Lab students explored the development of a short-film from concept to story-boarding to scripting, set design and layout, directing – and of course acting. Students had the chance to “specialize” and also cross-train in techniques of filming and video-editing. But that’s not the only cross-training students received; they also received daily self-defense instruction from the black belt instructors of Park’s Martial Arts plus daily Asian studies courses such as reading and writing the Korean language, Asian cultural etiquette, and even how to properly use chopsticks.

Art Class

Students had the opportunity to learn the basic skills of various artistic expressions that may include leather and metal tooling, clay and wire sculpture, mosaic, collage, book making, calligraphy, sketching, and painting, as well as, perspective techniques, color theory, various image transfer methods, and mat cutting.

Athletic Training
Staff: Doc Hunt
Exploring the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of the physically active. This course combines theory, practical labs, and field trips to various athletic training facilities. Students complete First Aid and CPR training, and achieve basic Athletic Training skills.

SAT/ACT Prep

Do you feel confident in your ability to:
A) narrow the college search down to a reasonable size list according to your specific criteria?
B) obtain your highest possible score on the ACT and SAT (which are used to determine acceptance and scholarship offers)
C) set up college visits, speak to faculty members and admissions counselors, and ask the right questions?
D) search and apply for scholarships?
E) know whether to take an SAT II Subject test?
F) find time to do all of this while you are taking classes during the traditional four block semester?

The Return of Indiana Jones and More
Staff: Mr. Jones
A look at archaeology and its impact on history and the world today! Under consideration are treasure-hunting adventures to museums in Philadelphia & Washington D.C. In addition, students became “armchair archaeologists” engaged in online research uncovering what has come to light at some ancient biblical sites and make become familiar with archaeological digs to be done in the near future. Artifact identification, field archaeology techniques, pottery restoration, surface survey and other scientific techniques were examined and applied by students.
