J-Term 2008 Courses

Tonoho O’odham Indian Reservation, Arizona
Staff: Ms. Workman
The students that flew to Sells, Arizona for J-term had an intense two-week period of ministry. They were challenged, educated, and trained for the mission field. Students were introduced to life on an Indian reservation, amd were involved in evangelism, worship services and children’s outreach. The students were immersed in Indian life and were instrumental in a remodeling project benefiting the youth of the church.

Habitat for Humanity
Staff: Mr. Mohr, Mr. Trice and Mr. Hurst
Headed by the boys’ and girls’ basketball teams, DCHS students and parents participated in the construction of a Habitat for Humanity home on site and at the school. Students learned and employed construction skills to provide affordable housing for a Sussex County family.

Art Class
Staff: Mrs. Betts
Mrs. Betts art students were introduced to basic skills in the fine arts and given the opportunity to create projects that were of personal interest and supported the mission of the school.

Hurricane Katrina Missions Trip
Staff: Mr. Rusty Dukes, Pastor Brown
An exciting opportunity to support those who have been devastated by hurricane Katrina. Katrina students were able to support the outreach of churches in the Gulfport, MS area through various construction and cleanup projects. Students were also challenged in their faith and encouraged to share that faith with others.

Masterpiece Ministries “Created to Create”
Staff: Mr. Scott
Students’ abilities in creative writing, and the visual arts are validated as genuine gifts from God. The Masterpiece Ministries Students have been encouraged to excellence in creative expression and performance and have positively impact the community for Christ, as they created and published literary works as well as a work of visual art.

Athletic Training
Staff: Doc Hunt
Doc’s students explored the prevention, treatment and rehabilitation of the physically active. The athletic training course combined theory, practical labs, and also took field trips to various athletic training facilities. Students also completed First Aid and CPR training, and achieved basic Athletic Training skills.

Home Missions
Staff: Sra. Curtis
The Home Missions students were challenged to reach out to various Hispanic communities in the local area. Outreach included projects and other forms of practical help as an extension of Christ’s love. Students were able to minister within the Hispanic Community of Sussex County with soup kitchens, work in the area elementary schools and cooking for both the Megan and Crisis houses here in Georgetown. Through these opportunities students were immersed in those cultures and were able to exercise their Spanish language skills.

Quilt and Care
Staff: Mrs. Kemerling
The girls that participated in the Quilt and Care course were able to learn about the Pro-Life mindset and responsibility of a Christian. They were able to complete baby quilts for the Pregnancy Center and volunteer at the Pregnancy Center for two days. The class culminated with a field trip to participate in the annual March for Life in Washington, DC as well as having the privilege of hearing national pro-life speakers at the Right For Life Rally.

Internships/Coop
Student Interns were given the opportunity to explore career related job opportunities through internships and cooperative work agreements with businesses or ministries.Additional Information: ::Pictures

Holy Lands Trip
Staff: Mr. Jones
The Israel group was able to explore the Holy Lands centering on developing a deeper understanding of God’s chosen people and His precious design for all of man. Using the Biet Bracha guest house in the Galilee as a base of operations, team members were able to visit prominent biblical sites while providing service to a Hebrew-Christian School, work at the homes of holocaust survivors, widows, single moms etc. They were even able to participate in a pro-life outreach in Tel Aviv. The team was able to help with renovations at the Shelter (Discipleship Center) in Eilat (also a super place to snorkel and swim with the dolphins! They got to meet with the local youth groups.

Aviation Science and the Adventure of Discovery
Staff: Pastor Abent and Mrs. Henry
Designed around the world of aerospace and aviation science, students were exposed to this part of our technical world through the study of various aspects of flight and hands on activities. Field trips included a trip to Langley AFB and other aviation facilities. Students were also able to “learn to fly” in a state of the art flight simulator.

Team Building
Staff: Mr. Vonhof
The DCHS girls’ basketball team took the time during J-term to learn self-defense and build a shed with Habitat For Humanity. They were able to do daily bible training and toured several colleges.
